When I was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I must have tried every gluten free product in my grocery store! I was on a mission to replace all the food in my life that I could no longer eat with gluten free alternatives. After a lot of expense, trial, and some oh-so nasty errors, I have located quite a few gluten free products that are now staples in my home. In this post I’m going to focus on the really tough ones to recreate in gluten free form: Bread, Pasta, and Crackers. Here’s a breakdown of the Best Gluten Free Products I’ve found.
Bread
The biggest challenge for me was finding a “do-able” gluten free bread. It’s amazing how many options there are and how awful some of them taste! And the cost! Holy cow, the cost of these disasters is a crime. I typically bake my own GF bread using a recipe from Namaste Foods. You can find that recipe in my post here. I also have a great recipe for Cinnamon Raisin bread that you can get here. However, sometimes I don’t have the time and/or energy to bake and will purchase a loaf.
My preferred brand is Canyon Bakehouse. They make several different types and all of them are wonderful! My favorites are their Country White, Cinnamon Raisin, and Hawaiian breads. They sell them at HEB and Sprouts here in Texas. This brand is also available on Amazon, if it’s not carried in your local grocery store. The links associated with each of the breads will take you to the Amazon listing.
And sometimes you need a little cornbread with your beans or chili. Krusteaz Gluten Free Honey Cornbread is A-mazing! I purchase it exclusively through Amazon because I can’t find it in stores near me.
If you can utilize Amazon’s “Add On” program, which ships items free on your Amazon Delivery day or with a qualified purchase of $25, then you can score this for less than $4/box!
Pasta
Pasta is another challenging product to replicate gluten free. You’ll see a bunch of different varieties out there from chickpea pasta to rice. For my Italian based recipes, I typically use a corn and rice pasta blend. I’ve used Barilla in the past, but my preference is Rummo. The best price I have found is at Alma Gourmet. However, they sell it seasonally at Costco or you can find it on Amazon here.
When I’m making Asian dishes like Lo Mein or Pad Thai, I’m partial to the rice blends. My go-to is Annie Chun’s Pad Thai Rice Noodle.
Crackers
Simple Mills brand takes the win in my book, hands down. Particularly, when it comes to gluten free “Cheez-it” like cheddar crackers. Their Farmhouse Cheddar crackers made with almond flour are quite tasty…and addicting! Just as an indulgent cheddar cracker should be. In my opinion, if you don’t have a hard time putting down the box because your hand keeps going after that salty, crunchy goodness, then the crackers aren’t worth the calories. I don’t even want to know how many other brands I’ve tried and immediately thrown away. Who would have thought that finding an edible GF cheese cracker would have been so difficult! I have found these a few times at HEB. Randalls also sells them, but it is more cost effective to buy them in bulk from Amazon.
Simply Mills has many different flavors of crackers that are also addictingly-amazing. A few of my other brand favorites are:
Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil, Rosemary & Sea Salt, and
Fine Ground Sea Salt. This one is great for when you want a plain/simple cracker.
Along with my love of Simple Mills’ crackers, I also hold Schar brand near to my heart. They have provided my little world with gluten free saltine, “Ritz,” and graham cracker alternatives.
Fair warning on Schar’s gluten free crackers- they are very delicate! These crackers have good flavor, but can be beyond crumbly, so consider yourself warned. Personally, I don’t care because I’m just happy to have substitutes for my snack-loving heart!
There are so many gluten free products on the market now. I chose to focus on the ones that are difficult to make gluten free: Bread, Pasta, and Crackers. These are the ones that I use regularly and consider to be the very Best Gluten Free Products!
Please send me your favorite gluten free products and I will feature them in a post. These can be food items, cosmetics, hair products, toiletries, etc. I want to hear about whatever gluten free products you hold near and dear to your heart!
I got some of the Canyon Bakehouse bread to try! I’m not celiac, but I do like to limit my gluten intake.
